This week in Band 10/29/2017

Dear band parents,

This is Justin Dickson, band director at Hawley Middle School.  Every week I will send out a message like this to communicate what is happening this week in band class, upcoming events, and other announcements.

IN THE BAND ROOM THIS WEEK
6th Grade will start Chapter 4 this week, and our next test will be #4.04 "Twinkle Twinkle."  This is a short chapter so we will probably start on Chapter 5 this week also.

7th Grade will continue working on our concert music.  We will test on "Majestica" on Wendesday, so practice practice practice!

8th Grade will start working on music for our next concert this week.  Please encourage your child to study their music at home.  We only have six weeks before the next concert, so we will need to learn the music quickly.

PEP BAND
No practice or games this week.  I expect we will have a playoff game next week, but I am not sure.  I will send out a text message as soon as I hear what the plan is from Coach Peace.  It all depends on whether or not the team wins their away game this week.

PLEASE SIGN UP FOR TEXT ANNOUNCEMENTS
If you have not already done so, please sign up to receive text message announcements from me via the Remind app.  You do not have to download the app.  Just sent a text message to phone number 81010 , and the text message should say...
     ... @HawleyBa17 for sixth grade
     ... @HawleyBa16 for seventh grade
     ... @HawleyBa15 for eighth grade

TECHNOLOGY TO MAKE LEARNING EASIER
By now, most of you know that I designed a free mobile app for my students called Bandmate Chromatic Tuner (www.bandmatetuner.com).  I highly recommend that you download it, or that your child downloads it on their phone / tablet if they have one, because it makes it so much easier for kids to learn their notes while they are practicing at home.
Students are allowed to use it in band class, too.  In fact, I highly encourage it.  If you would like your child to use it in class, I recommend you purchase the Peterson PitchGrabber pickup: https://www.amazon.com/Peterson-PitchGrabber-Mobile-Tuner/dp/B014L9CCHO/
This is like a microphone that will only "hear" your instrument, so you can use the Bandmate app in class while other people are playing their instruments beside you.
The Bandmate Tuner app is a big deal because it gives personal feedback to students while they learn.  It lets students see what note they are playing, so that they can check for themselves if they are playing the right note or not.  It has made it so much easier for my students to learn, and people all around the world have discovered it and are using it in their own music programs.  In fact I expect it will hit 1 million downloads by October.

FLUTES, CLARINETS, AND SAXOPHONES NEED A SWAB
If your child plays a woodwind instrument (flute, clarinet, or saxophone), they need a swab so they can clean out their instrument every day before putting it back in the case.  You can order one from Hills Music Shop if you do not have one.
If woodwinds are stored in the case without swabbing, moisture causes the pads under the keys to wrinkle and be ruined.  This costs $100-200 to fix, depending on the extent of the damage.  A swab costs $5.  Please make sure your child has a swab.

Dear band parents,

This is Justin Dickson, band director at Hawley Middle School.  Every week I will send out a message like this to communicate what is happening this week in band class, upcoming events, and other announcements.

IN THE BAND ROOM THIS WEEK
6th Grade will continue working through Chapter 3 this week.  Our next test will be #3.11, but we are not there yet.  Students who still need to pass off #2.10 may do so when they are ready, they just need to let me know.

7th Grade will continue working on our concert music this week.  We will test on "Rudolph" this week.  We will also continue learning our second piece.

8th Grade will spend the week working on our music for our upcoming concert.  We are playing some very challenging music, but I know we can do it.  The more your child practices at home, the better we will be, so please encourage them to bring their instrument home and make sure they know their notes.
8th grade (and only 8th grade) first concert is NEXT THURSDAY, October 26.  Please make sure you have your black & white attire.

PEP BAND

This week in band - Oct 8, 2017

Dear band parents,

This is Justin Dickson, band director at Hawley Middle School.  Every week I will send out a message like this to communicate what is happening this week in band class, upcoming events, and other announcements.

IN THE BAND ROOM THIS WEEK
6th Grade will start working through Chapter 3 this week, in which we learn about half notes and whole notes.  Some students still need to pass their #2.10 "Mary Had A Little Lamb" test, and they will have time during class to do that.  Our next test will be #3.11, but we will probably not get to it until next week.

7th Grade will continue working on our concert music this week.  Our next test will be on the first piece we learned, "Rudolph," this week.  We will also continue learning our second piece.

8th Grade will continue working through "Darklands March" this week.  We will test on this material soon, so students should be practicing at home every week.  It is a difficult piece, but I hope to get through it in time to add a fourth piece for our October concert.
8th grade (and only 8th grade) first concert is October 26!  Please make sure you have your black & white attire.

This Week In Band - 10/01/2017

Dear band parents,

This is Justin Dickson, band director at Hawley Middle School.  Every week I will send out a message like this to communicate what is happening this week in band class, upcoming events, and other announcements.

8TH GRADER NIGHT WITH THE S.G.H.S. MARCHING BAND - THIS FRIDAY!!!      On Friday, October 6, our 8th graders are invited to be honorary members of the South Granville High School marching band at their home football game!  Your child will get into the game for free, sit with the marching band, and play along with some of the music they play during the game!
This is a special opportunity for your child to meet the high school band students and see for themselves what high school band is like (it is very different than middle school band and very, very fun).  Every year, kids come back from this event saying things to me like "I am definitely doing marching band" and "I can't wait until I'm in high school."  Plus, I hear there will be free pizza.
If your child is planning to attend, please turn in the permission form no later than Tuesday.  We need a headcount to know how much pizza to order, how much music to print, etc.  Permission forms were stapled to progress reports that were handed out last Wednesday.  If you need another copy, here it is:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rb2gzLq57ipSzs1HN4qZmWge41QzfLhBYJhzZ7cIGDQ/edit?usp=sharing

IN THE BAND ROOM THIS WEEK
6th Grade is working through Chapter 2.  Our next test will be #2.10 "Mary Had A Little Lamb".   I would like for everyone to test by the end of the week.

7th Grade will start working on our concert music this week.  We will test on this material, but not until next week.  But please do not wait until next week to start studying!  Students should be practicing at home 2 hours / week.

8th Grade will continue working through "Darklands March" this week.  We will also test on "Thriller" on Wednesday, and the final makeup deadline for that test will be next Wednesday.  On Friday we will learn South Granville marching band music so that we are ready for "8th Grader Night".
8th grade (and only 8th grade) first concert is October 26!

PEP BAND
Practice this Wednesday after school.  No home game for us this week.
